Dimitri Hegemann founded Tresor in March 1991 after his club UFO closed, in the vaults of the old Wertheim department store on Leipziger Strasse. The basement took the hard techno. Upstairs, the Globus floor played mellower house, a split that is easy to forget when people talk about the place as a techno monument. Tresor Records followed in October 1991. The original site shut on 16 April 2005, and the club came back on 24 May 2007 in the southern tract of the decommissioned Heizkraftwerk Berlin-Mitte power station on Köpenicker Straße. Tresor is now the basement room, Globus survives upstairs for house and experimental nights, and the Aurora Bar opens on some nights. A Lambda Labs system went in during a refurbishment before the club reopened in May 2022. It holds about 1,000. Nights run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with Saturday's Klubnacht carrying on into Sunday morning. Anyone who cares about the Berlin and Detroit connection ends up here sooner or later.
