Motion started as a rough skatepark called Sk8 & Ride on Avon Street, and from about 2006 the building turned into a nightclub as well. It became a Grade II listed warehouse complex with a 1,600-capacity main room and the Marble Factory next door, and DJ Mag's poll placed it 11th in the world in 2019. Then the lease ran out. It announced in November 2024 that it would leave Avon Street, closed in July 2025 after a long dispute with the landlord, and held a funeral for itself ahead of the last weekend. It came back quickly. The new home is Unit 2, Victoria Terrace in St Philips, about ten minutes' walk from the old one and close to Temple Meads, and it reopened on 10 and 11 October 2025 as what the student paper called Motion 2.0. Skiddle lists the new capacity as both 800 and 1,000, so we have left it blank. A new event series, Momentum, is aimed at local talent. The owners said they wanted a space nobody could take from them again.
