Musicians Rocko Schamoni and Schorsch Kamerun started the Pudel in 1988, and in 1995 it moved into a small building from 1872 down on the Fischmarkt, close to the Elbe. It has never been big and no one has published a capacity figure, which is about right. It is the sort of room where a record can be wrong for ten minutes and nobody leaves. A long ownership dispute ended with the building heading for auction, and on the night of 13 to 14 February 2016 a fire ran through it. Police suspected arson. The rebuild drew on 300,000 euros of federal aid and a lot of goodwill. The ground floor reopened on 17 August 2017 and the upper floors followed in July 2019. Schamoni passed his share to the Golden Pudel Stiftung in 2018, a move meant to keep the place out of the market's hands. It opens most nights. For a lot of DJs, this is the one room in Germany they would play for petrol money.
