Dr. Motte started the Love Parade in Berlin in 1989. It ended after the Duisburg disaster of 2010, and in 2019 he set up Rave The Planet as a nonprofit to bring something like it back. The first parade ran in July 2022, on the Love Parade's old route through the Tiergarten. It counts legally as a political demonstration, entry is free and there is no fence, so attendance figures are estimates and vary a lot. Organisers claimed about 200,000 in 2022 and about 400,000 for 2026, when 34 floats and more than 300 artists ran from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column on 15 August. Long roadworks on the western section of Straße des 17. Juni, expected to last until about 2029, keep it to the eastern stretch. In March 2024 Berlin techno culture joined Germany's national inventory of intangible cultural heritage, after a push led by Rave The Planet. For 2027 the Visit Berlin calendar says 10 July, provisionally, and subject to final confirmation.
