Dekmantel began as club nights run by the Dutch DJs Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij, with a label following from 2009. The first festival took place in August 2013 in the Amsterdamse Bos, the big planted forest on the city's southern edge, limited to 5,000 tickets, with Four Tet, Jeff Mills and Floating Points on the bill. The Bos has been its home ever since. The week now opens with concerts at city venues such as the Oude Kerk, the Melkweg and Paradiso, then moves to the woods. Sound and booking are the argument. It has become a reference point for people who think hard about records, sometimes accused of being the algorithm's favourite festival, and that is a problem many others would like to have. The 2024 tenth-anniversary edition was its biggest. No current capacity has been published that we could verify. The 2026 edition, the twelfth, ran from 29 July to 2 August. Amsterdam's tourist board lists days from 28 to 31 July for the 13th in 2027, marked as subject to change.
