ADE began in 1996 as a three-day conference with 300 delegates and thirty DJs. It is now five days in mid October, run by the Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation, with a daytime business programme and a night festival across some 200 clubs and venues. Wikipedia gives 2,500 or more artists and either 400,000 or 500,000 visitors depending on the paragraph you read, and any number that big is an estimate. In practice it is the week the international dance industry goes to Amsterdam to do deals, meet distributors, compare hangovers and walk along canals in the rain. It expanded from four days to five in 2012, and ADE by Day began in 2011. The 2026 edition, the 30th anniversary year, ran from 21 to 25 October. Small labels go because everyone who presses, distributes or books records is within a mile of each other for one week a year. Dutch site Festival Fans and Wikipedia both give 20 to 24 October 2027, but ADE's own site only offers pre-registration for now.
